Overview: QR (Quick Response) codes are two-dimensional barcodes invented by Denso Wave in 1994. Unlike traditional barcodes that store data horizontally, QR codes store information both horizontally and vertically, allowing them to hold significantly more data.
QR codes have become ubiquitous in modern society, bridging the physical and digital worlds through smartphones and enabling instant access to information, payments, and services.
Common Applications:
• Mobile payments and digital wallets
• Restaurant menus and ordering systems
• Event tickets and boarding passes
• WiFi network sharing
• Product tracking and inventory
• Contact information sharing (vCard)
• Marketing campaigns and advertisements
Key Components:
Position Markers:
Three square patterns in corners for scanner orientation
Alignment Patterns:
Smaller squares that help scanners read distorted codes
Timing Patterns:
Alternating black and white modules for coordinate reference
Data and Error Correction:
Actual encoded information with Reed-Solomon error correction
Data Capacity by Type:
• Numeric: Up to 7,089 characters
• Alphanumeric: Up to 4,296 characters
• Binary/Byte: Up to 2,953 bytes
• Kanji: Up to 1,817 characters
Error Correction Levels:
• L (Low): ~7% correction capability
• M (Medium): ~15% correction capability
• Q (Quartile): ~25% correction capability
• H (High): ~30% correction capability
Higher error correction allows QR codes to be read even when partially damaged or obscured.
Best Practices:
• Maintain adequate quiet zone (white space) around the code
• Test scanning at intended viewing distance
• Use URL shorteners for long web addresses
• Consider error correction level based on use case
• Ensure sufficient contrast between foreground and background
• Avoid placing codes on curved or reflective surfaces
Special QR Code Types:
• URL: Opens websites directly
• WiFi: WIFI:T:WPA;S:NetworkName;P:Password;;
• Email: mailto:email@example.com
• SMS: smsto:+1234567890:Message
• Phone: tel:+1234567890
• Location: geo:latitude,longitude
